Election coverage damaged Liberian media
Currently there are 316 Monrovia-based journalists and 178 rural journalists for a total of 494 active reporters in Liberia. In Monrovia there alone there are 16 radio stations, 19 newspapers and 3 television stations. In addition the country has 31 community/rural radio stations.
After the election quite a number of journalists and editors left or were let go for a variety of reasons and have found jobs both in private and government sector.
“Politicians need to refrain from manipulating the media and the public should support the media,” said Raymond K. Zarbay Jr. at the UNMIL Radio in Liberia.
"Media need to commit to professionalism and accountability," Zarbay declared. "In order to change the situation, the media need to be empowered, both financially as well as by training."
