APEC Condemns Paris Attacks

MANILA, Nov. 19 – Leaders attending the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit which ended here Thursday strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Paris, Beirut, and the downing of a Russian passenger plane in Sinai, and elsewhere as they stressed the need to increase global cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

They made the urgent call in a joint Leaders Declaration issued at the end of the two-day Leaders Summit hosted by Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III.

This year’s theme is: “Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World: A Vision for an Asia-Pacific Community.”

APEC is presently composed of 21 world economies: Australia, Brunei, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong-China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States and Vietnam.

This was the second time that the Philippines hosted the APEC conference. The first was in 1996 during the incumbency of President Fidel V. Ramos.

The summit was held in aftermath of the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 129 innocent people and wounded 350 others. It was the worst attacks by Islamic terror group in Europe since the Madrid train bombings that killed 191 people and 1,800 wounded on March 11, 2004.

In their Declaration, the 21 APEC leaders said: “Under the shadow cast by the terrorist attacks in Paris, Beirut, and against Russian aircraft over the Sinai, and elsewhere, we strongly condemn all acts, methods, and practices of terrorism in all their forms and manifestations. We will not allow terrorism to threaten the fundamental values that underpin our free and open economies. Economic growth, prosperity, and opportunity are among the most powerful tools to address the root causes of terrorism and radicalization. We stress the urgent need for increased international cooperation and solidarity in the fight against terrorism.”
