Journalists share storytelling vision

Five journalists from across Africa are now back in their home countries polishing the skills they learned during The Media Project’s pilot program on visual storytelling.

The inaugural workshop took place in Cape Town, South Africa. Journalists from Togo, Burundi, Rwanda, and Kenya came to participate in training sessions on topic selection, narrative storytelling, visual ethics, interview basics, camera skills and non-linear editing techniques.

The course required participants to put their new skills to use in and out of the classroom under deadline pressure.

At the end of the week, each journalist participant produced and edited an original mini-documentary on one aspect of life in Cape Town. The primary goal of the program is to provide editorial and practical training to equip journalists to tell visual stories about their homeland.

The training program is the vision of Media Project Board Member and independent filmmaker, Jody Hassett Sanchez who also served as the keynote instructor.
